Platforms and compatibility
Which systems AirWallet runs on, what each one needs, which features work where, and how old an Android phone can be.
AirWallet runs on macOS, Windows, Linux, Android and Chrome, and as a watch-only web page. Each platform has one app, which you set up as an everyday wallet or as an offline signer, and a hardened build called AirWallet Offline that cannot connect at all. To install, see Install.
What each platform needs
| Platform | Download | Needs |
|---|---|---|
| macOS | A disk image (DMG), one for Apple Silicon and one for Intel | macOS 11 or later. Vanity search on Apple Silicon needs macOS 14 or later. |
| Windows | One .exe file | Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit) with Microsoft Edge WebView2 |
| Linux | One .AppImage file (x86-64) | WebKitGTK for its window, and FUSE to start it with a double-click |
| Android | An APK file | Android 10 or later as it comes. Android 7 to 9 need one update first (see below). |
| Chrome extension | A zip file | Chrome 116 or later |
| AirWallet Online | A web page at airwallet.tech/online, which you can install as an app | A current web browser |
On a computer, AirWallet's screens run in the system's own web engine: Safari 14's engine or later on macOS, WebView2 on Windows and WebKitGTK on Linux. Without WebKitGTK, the Linux app opens in a Chromium-family browser on a private profile with extensions turned off, or else in Firefox on a fresh profile. It never uses your everyday browser profile.
What works where
| Feature | Mac | Windows | Linux | Android | Chrome extension | AirWallet Online |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin, Ethereum and its networks, Solana | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes, Ethereum's own network only |
| Monero and Zcash | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes (see old phones below) | Yes | Yes |
| Offline signer | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Offline build only | No |
| Vanity search | Yes | Yes | Yes | No | Yes | No |
| App lock | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes, with fingerprint on Android 11 and later | Password | Password |
| Disguise looks | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | No | No |
| Automatic backups | Turn on | Turn on | Turn on | On by default | No | No |
| Payment notifications | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | No | Yes |
Some of this has not been tried on real hardware yet:
- the Windows app's own window
- Zcash on Windows and Linux, which runs the same code as on the Mac
Vanity search on Windows and Linux needs a graphics chip with an OpenCL driver.
Old phones
An old phone makes a good offline signer. What limits it is the phone's web engine, which AirWallet's screens run in. On Android 7 to 9 the engine is Chrome. From Android 10 it is Android System WebView.
An offline phone cannot update its web engine, and a factory reset puts back the version the phone shipped with. On Android's stock system images, that is:
| Android version | Web engine after a factory reset |
|---|---|
| 7.0 | 51 |
| 7.1 | 52 |
| 8.0 | 58 |
| 8.1 | 61 |
| 9 | 66 |
| 10 | 74 |
| 11 | 83 |
| 12 | 91 |
| 13 | 101 |
| 14 | 113 |
Phone makers often ship a newer engine than this. AirWallet needs:
- web engine 67 or later for the app itself, Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and Zcash
- web engine 74 or later for Monero on Android
So Android 10 and later run everything, even after a factory reset. Android 9 works if its maker shipped engine 67 or later. Otherwise, Android 7 to 9 need one update while the phone is still online:
- Connect the phone to Wi-Fi.
- Update Chrome from the Play Store.
- Install AirWallet, then switch to airplane mode for good.
Without a Google account, Aurora Store (from F-Droid) installs Play Store apps anonymously. They are still signed by Google. To see a phone's version, open Android Settings → Apps → Chrome, or Android System WebView. A factory reset after the update puts the old engine back.
If one coin cannot run in a phone's engine, AirWallet says so once, for example "Monero can't run in this phone's web engine… it needs version 74 or newer". Every other coin keeps working.
